Your Brain Is Holding You Back – Here’s How to Quickly Re-Train It for Success.

Read Time – 3 Minutes

Your brain doesn’t understand negatives.

That might sound strange, but it’s true.

Imagine you’re about to give a big presentation. You tell yourself, “Don’t mess this up.” But suddenly, all you can think about is messing up. Why? Because your brain doesn’t process negatives the way you expect.

If I say, “Don’t think of an elephant,” what just popped into your head? An elephant, right?

That’s because your brain can’t process the word “don’t” the way you expect it to. It focuses on the subject of the sentence – exactly what you were trying to avoid.

And this little quirk of the human mind? It’s one of the biggest reasons you keep getting in your own way.

Let’s talk about how to flip the script and train your brain to focus on what you do want, not what you don’t.

#1 The Secret Athletes and Pilots Already Know

Elite athletes and pilots are trained to focus on where they want to go – not on the obstacles in their way.

Skiers don’t tell themselves, “Don’t hit the trees.” They focus on “Find the path.” Pilots don’t hear, “Don’t crash into that mountain.” They focus on “Stay on course.” Because whatever you focus on is what you’re going to see.

The same is true for you.

When you tell yourself, “I can’t mess up this presentation,” your brain latches onto mess up and anxiety skyrockets. Instead, shift your focus to, “I’m going to deliver my message clearly and confidently.”

That simple shift changes everything.

What you focus on, your brain moves towards. So, set your sights on where you want to go, not on what you’re afraid of.

#2 Your Words Shape Your Reality

Every time you say, “I’m not good enough,” or “I can’t do this,” you reinforce that belief.

Your brain takes it as truth and starts collecting evidence to back it up. Before you know it, you’re stuck in a loop of self-doubt.

Instead of saying, “I can’t get a promotion,” reframe it: “I’m working toward my next promotion.” Instead of, “I’m terrible at public speaking,” try, “I’m improving my public speaking skills.”

This isn’t about toxic positivity – it’s about training your brain to look for solutions instead of problems. Your words matter. Choose them wisely.

The mind is everything. What you think you become.

Buddha.

#3 The Parenting Trick That Works on Adults Too

Parents learn this the hard way: Telling a child, “Don’t run across the street!” almost guarantees they’ll bolt into traffic. But saying, “Hold my hand when we cross the street” gives their brain a clear action to follow.

You need to do the same for yourself.

Instead of, “Don’t overthink this,” say, “Trust your instincts and make a decision.” Instead of, “Don’t be nervous,” say, “Breathe deeply and stay present.”

Clarity beats confusion. Give your brain a clear direction, and it will follow.

#4 The Everyday Language Shift That Changes Everything

We do this in everyday conversation, too.

We say, “Don’t forget to send that email,” instead of “Remember to send that email.” We say, “Don’t be late,” instead of “Be on time.”

These small shifts might seem trivial, but they make a huge difference. Your brain thrives on clear, positive instructions. The more you practice, the easier it gets.

Remember, your brain is wired to focus on whatever you feed it. If you fixate on obstacles, all you’ll see are obstacles. If you focus on opportunities, you’ll start seeing paths forward that weren’t visible before.

So, stop telling your brain what you don’t want. Start giving it clear, positive, actionable direction.

Try this: This week, pay attention to how you phrase things. Catch yourself using negatives, and reframe them into clear, positive directions. Your brain will thank you!

Cheering you on,
