Read Time – 3 Minutes
Over the past 25 years, I have read, watched, and listened to thousands of books, videos, and podcasts on the subject of personal development.
And while I enjoyed many of those books and learned a lot, there’s one TED Talk I can say truly had a life-changing impact on me: The Power of Vulnerability by Brené Brown.
And the reason it had such an impact was because it was SO uncomfortable.
If you’re anything like me, the mere mention of the word ‘vulnerability’ makes your toes curl.
But stick with me on this one …
If you haven’t yet seen this remarkable talk (watched by over 20 million people!), let me give you a glimpse into why it’s had such an incredible impact on so many lives, including mine.
Brené’s brilliance lies in her ability to connect research and storytelling, making complex ideas deeply personal and actionable.
She talks about something we all wrestle with but rarely name: vulnerability – and how it’s not a weakness but a superpower.
Why This Talk Resonates So Deeply
Vulnerability is often misunderstood.
It’s something that we’re typically taught to avoid , cover up, or power through.
But Brené’s research reveals a different truth – vulnerability is the birthplace of connection, creativity, courage, and love.
It’s the key to truly showing up in our lives and being seen for who we are.
Her talk inspires because it’s not about achieving perfection – it’s about embracing imperfection – and that’s where growth happens.
Key Takeaways from ‘The Power of Vulnerability’
Here’s some of the standout insights from Brené’s talk that everyone can benefit from:
>> Connection is what gives life meaning. We’re wired to connect with others, and our relationships define much of our happiness and fulfillment.
>> Shame and fear hold us back. These emotions make us feel unworthy and lead us to hide our true selves.
>> Vulnerability is not weakness. It’s courage in action – the willingness to show up and let ourselves be seen, even when there are no guarantees.
>> Embrace your imperfections. Owning your flaws is what makes you relatable and real. Perfectionism, on the other hand, is a shield that keeps people at a distance.
>> Authenticity is everything. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, you give others permission to do the same, creating deeper, more meaningful connections.
You can’t get to courage without walking through vulnerability.

How You Can Begin to Embrace Vulnerability
It’s one thing to understand these concepts – it’s another to put them into practice.
Here’s a few steps you can take today:
Step #1: Start Small
Share something honest about yourself with a trusted friend or colleague – a fear, a mistake, or even a hope.
Step #2: Recognize Your Triggers
Notice when shame or fear shows up in your life. What situations make you want to hide or put up walls?
Step #3: Practice Self-Compassion.
When you catch yourself striving for perfection, pause and remind yourself that being human means being imperfect.
Step #4: Seek Meaningful Connections.
Spend time with people who value authenticity and encourage you to show up as your true self.
Step #5: Take Courageous Action.
Do something that scares you but aligns with your values – whether it’s speaking up in a meeting, pursuing a dream, or reaching out to someone you admire.
The Uncomfortable Truth
When you embrace vulnerability, life changes.
You stop living behind a mask and start showing up as the real you.
You’ll find that relationships deepen, creativity flows, and new opportunities emerge.
You’ll experience a sense of freedom and courage that only comes from knowing you’re worthy just as you are.
Brené’s work reminds us that vulnerability isn’t optional if we want to live fully. It’s the bridge to everything meaningful in life.
So, I encourage you to take that first step today – however small it may seem – and start leaning into vulnerability.
The rewards are profound.
Until next time, keep showing up, (even when it feels hard).
Cheering you on, (especially when it feels hard).
