Quit or Grit: Is Pushing Through Doing More Harm Than Good?

Read Time – 3 Minutes

Most people either:

Quit too soon. They give up at the first sign of difficulty, mistaking discomfort for failure.

Or

Stick with it for too long. They persist in a situation that no longer serves them, out of fear, ego, or a sense of obligation.

We’re taught to persevere through challenges, embrace grit, and never give up.

But what happens when persistence stops serving you?

Knowing when to quit and when to grit isn’t about making tough choices – it’s about making aligned choices.

The Cost of Grit Without Purpose

Grit is often celebrated as a hallmark of success. And yes, resilience is powerful.

But what happens when grit becomes stubbornness?

Holding on to a project, role, or even a dream that no longer aligns with your values or goals can drain your energy, time, and confidence.

Consider this: Every “yes” to something that isn’t working is a “no” to something that could.

Signs It May Be Time to Quit

>> You’re driven by obligation, not passion. If the only reason you’re persisting is a fear of judgment or guilt, it’s worth asking: Who are you doing this for?

>> The effort isn’t leading to growth. Challenges are meant to stretch you, not deplete you. If you’re spinning your wheels without progress, it may be time to reassess.

>> It’s misaligned with your values or future goals. Success isn’t just about achievement – it’s about fulfilment. If your efforts don’t align with your bigger picture, consider pivoting.

When Grit Matters Most

On the flip side, grit is your ally when:

>> The challenge matches your vision. If the effort moves you closer to the person you want to become, it’s worth pushing through discomfort.

>> You’re in a growth zone. Challenges that make you uncomfortable but also lead to skills, insights, or resilience are invaluable.

>> Your “why” still motivates you. If the purpose behind your persistence still excites you, then grit is likely the right call.

How to Decide: Quit or Grit?

So, how to decide? Harvard Psychologist, Susan David, offers five powerful questions to help untangle whether it’s time to hold on or let go:

  1. Overall, do I find joy or satisfaction in what I’m doing?
  2. Does this reflect what’s important to me (my values)?
  3. Does this draw on my strengths?
  4. If I’m completely honest with myself, do I believe I (or this situation) can really be a success?
  5. What opportunities will I give up if I pursue this?

Making the Decision

When you’re caught between gritting and quitting, use this three-step approach:

  1. Journal your thoughts on the above questions. Be brutally honest with yourself as you answer.
  2. Seek an outside perspective. A coach, mentor, or trusted friend can provide clarity and a space to think it through.
  3. Visualize both outcomes. Imagine your future if you quit versus if you continue. Which feels lighter, more aligned, and more inspiring?

Your Challenge this Week

Take a moment to evaluate an area of your life where you feel stuck.

Are you demonstrating grit or being stubborn? What would happen if you allowed yourself to choose differently?

Remember, quitting isn’t failure. It’s making space for something better.

And grit isn’t blind perseverance – it’s resilience with purpose.

The magic lies in discerning which path aligns with your values and highest future self.

Cheering you on,
