Read Time – 3 Minutes
Comparison is a trap.
It’s that sneaky voice in your head whispering, “She’s more successful,” or “He’s got it all together.”
But here’s the truth: comparison is built on lies.
And if you’re not careful, it will quietly erode your confidence, joy, and sense of worth. There’s a reason why Simon Sinek called comparison the MOST self-destructive habit there is …
So let’s talk about why this self-destructive habit is holding you back – and what you can do instead.
Why Comparison is So Self-Destructive
#1 Comparison Isn’t Based in Reality.
You’re comparing their highlight reel to your behind-the-scenes.
Think about it: we show the best parts of ourselves to the world – smiles, wins, curated social media posts – while hiding the messy, vulnerable parts.
And yet, when you compare yourself to someone else, you’re stacking their polished exterior against the unedited version of yourself.
Of course you come up short!
The truth is, you don’t know their full story. That “perfect” person you’re envying? They have struggles too.
Comparison blinds you to this reality. It’s like judging a book by its cover while ignoring your own plot twists.
This matters because every time you buy into the lie, you rob yourself of self-compassion and perspective.
#2 Comparison Fuels a False Belief About Your Worth.
Here’s a hard pill to swallow: when you base your worth on being ‘better’ than someone else, you’re giving away your power.
You’re letting external circumstances – a promotion, a compliment, or someone else’s failure – define how you feel about yourself.
This external locus of control is exhausting and unsustainable. And it can also contribute to burnout.
Why?
Because there will always be someone smarter, prettier, or more successful.
Basing your worth on comparison is like building a house on sand – it will crumble every time the tide changes.
The truth is, your worth is inherent. It’s not something you need to prove by measuring up to others.
#3 Comparison Isolates You.
Comparison thrives on scarcity: the belief that if someone else wins, you lose.
But here’s the thing – success, happiness, and fulfilment aren’t limited resources. When you view life as a competition, you cut yourself off from connection, collaboration, and joy.
Think about the last time you felt jealous or inferior.
>> Did it make you want to reach out and connect?
>> Or did it make you retreat and stew in your feelings?
Comparison doesn’t just hurt your self-esteem, it puts walls between you and the people around you. When you stop comparing, you’ll notice something incredible – you can celebrate others’ success and still thrive.
The Solution: How to Break Free from Comparison
If you’re tired of comparison stealing your joy, here’s the good news: you can break the habit.
Here’s how.
Pay attention to the people, places, or situations that spark comparison. Is it social media? A specific colleague? A family member? Recognize when and where these thoughts pop up so you can catch yourself in the act.
Instead of measuring yourself against someone else, look at your own growth. Are you a little better, stronger, or wiser than you were yesterday? That’s a game you can win – and it’s the only one that matters.
Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, and not to who someone else is today.
Jordan Peterson
When you catch yourself envying someone, flip the script. What can you learn from them? Maybe they’re great at speaking up in meetings or setting boundaries. Admire their strengths, and ask yourself how you can apply what you’ve noticed to your own life.
Who do you want to be? How do you want to show up in the world? Focus on living with integrity and aligning your actions with your values. When you’re grounded in what matters to you, other people’s paths stop feeling so relevant.
Incremental progress is powerful. Just like saving money compounds over time, so does self-improvement. Commit to being 1% better each day. Over weeks and months, those tiny steps will lead to incredible transformation.
Here’s the bottom line: comparing yourself to others will always leave you feeling ‘less than.’ The truth is, you don’t know their struggles, and they don’t know yours.
The only fair comparison is to who you were yesterday.
So, the next time you catch yourself slipping into the comparison trap, ask: What can I do today to be a little better, a little stronger, and a little more aligned with my values?
Stop comparing. Start growing.
